BaptismIf you live in the Belmont area, you are very welcome to bring your child, or children, to St Mary Magdalene to be baptised in a Christening service.

Christenings either take place in the main Sunday morning service at 10.30am, or in a separate service at 12.30pm (in which case we ask you to come to church at 10.30am the following week for your family to be welcomed into the congregation and to receive your baptism certificate).

There is no charge for this service, although a gift to the church to help cover the cost of keeping the church open in the future is very welcome.

In a Christening service your child will be baptised with water. Baptism is the beginning of membership of the Christian Church, and parents and godparents promise in the service to bring the child up as a member of the Church. For this reason we ask you to first come to two services (on a Sunday or Wednesday morning). At the first you can collect an Application for Baptism form, and bring it back on your second visit. We can then discuss a date for the service: unfortunately due to high demand and to be fair to all families we are unable to allocate dates before this stage. We will also ask you to attend a Baptism Preparation evening. At these evenings we will explore what baptism means, explain the promises you will be asked to make, and explain how the church can help in bringing your child up in the Christian faith. Please contact the vicar, or have a word after the service when you visit us, if you would like to come along to the next one to find out more.

Adults and teenagers who come to faith are usually baptised at a confirmation service when the Bishop is visiting.

Please come along to a service to collect an application form and find out more about being a member of our church. If you are an adult who is interested in baptism for yourself, or would like to know more about the Christian faith, please contact the vicar .
